Homer is traditionally considered the author of the ancient Greek epic poems "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey," widely thought to be the first pieces of Western literature that still exist. Many people think of him as the first and most important of all the Greek writers and the person who started the whole Western literary tradition.
He was an early poet who lived at a turning point in the development of Greek society from pre-literate to literate, from the centuries-old bardic tradition of oral verse to the then-new technique of alphabetic writing. He was born somewhere between the 12th and 8th centuries BC.
The historical Homer remains a mystery, with no concrete evidence suggesting his existence. But of the many traditions and myths that have grown up around him, the most common and likely one is that he was born in Smyrna and died on the Cycladic island of Ios.
Homer's Iliad is about a fight between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles in the last year of the Trojan War. In The Odyssey, the king of Ithaca, Odysseus, tells the story of his ten-year journey back to his home after Troy falls. Homeric Greek, also called "Epic Greek," is the language of the poems. It is a literary language that combines parts of the Ionic and Aeolic dialects from different times, with the Eastern Ionic influence being the strongest. Most scholars agree that poetry was first passed down through word of mouth.
Homer's epic poems greatly impacted ancient Greek culture and education, helping spread ideas of bravery, glory, and honor. Plato just thought of Homer as the person who "taught Greece." In Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, Virgil calls Homer "Poet sovereign," which means "king of all poets." In the preface to his translation of the Iliad, Alexander Pope says that Homer has always been seen as the "greatest of poets." Since ancient times, Homer's epics have been a source of ideas for many famous books, songs, paintings, and movies.
