K&N Filter Failure

K&N said this $400 filter was good to go out of the box.
"The service interval for a drop-in replacement K&N® High-Flow Air Filter™ can vary greatly depending on the severity of driving conditions—from 100 miles in a desert-racing environment to up to 50,000 miles under normal highway driving conditions."
They lied! After a couple hundred miles of 50/50 on and off road driving, the filter failure cost nearly $30,000 for an inframe rebuild on a Detroit 8V92. Shop said only a teaspoon of dust will "dust the motor" and said they have seen this happen before with K&N.
