4K Ultra HD NEW MOVIE TRAILERS FOR 2023
Forget identifying the street signs or the buses. Your response to M3GAN might serve as its own CAPTCHA: if you didn't enjoy yourself, you're probably a robot. M3GAN was advertised by Blumhouse as a horror film, and there are jump scares and violent outbursts to support that claim. But the way this expensive AI doll moves—who is physically portrayed by Amie Donald—has a peculiar and invariably amusing quality. M3GAN had my theater collapsing in a good type of pain whether she was dancing in a hallway or prance across the woods like a monster.

A peach-harvesting family in modern-day Catalonia is depicted in Carla Simón's sophomore film as they confront the end of an era as their orchard is ready to be razed to make room for solar panel construction. It's the kind of struggle that is frequently presented in films as a clear choice between good and evil. But what makes Alcarras so invigorating is that Simón observes rather than judges, humanizing—but not lionizing—the people caught in the flow of change.

The fact that Kyle Edward Ball's feature debut feels both contemporary and evocative is one of its magical qualities. Another factor is that its languid pace and hazy background sounds might put you to sleep, while its midnight view of a suburban home is the stuff of (millennial) children's nightmares. Ball has a knack for framing and is obviously skilled at bringing analogue horror into the modern era. It makes sense why his movie has become such a viral hit.

The narrative debut of documentarian Alice Diop has a lot going on underneath. As seen through the eyes of Rama (Kayije Kagame), a novelist and literary professor, in the trial of Laurence Coly, a woman accused of killing her 15-month-old daughter, Diop creates a meta-narrative on true crime spectatorship, cultural dislocation, myth, and motherhood. Diop operates in the method of observation, unlike the French court system, which seeks to justify—and ultimately condemn—Coly for her deeds. She would rather ask intriguing questions than look for straightforward solutions. She accentuates the complexity and enigma of human faces by relying on lengthy, beautifully edited takes. There are methods to attempt even if we can never fully comprehend one another.

As you might expect from the seasoned actor, Jesse Eisenberg's directorial debut is sharp, wry, intelligent, and intimate. Eisenberg casts Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard to play a high-minded social worker and her shallow teenage musician son in the adaptation of his own audiobook, which is based in part on his own love life. Particularly Moore delivers a strong portrayal, expressing a kind of high, humorless altruism that can be as annoying as it is well-intentioned.

One of my favorite comedies in a very long time is Clay Tatum and Whitmer Thomas' The Civil Dead. Thomas plays a ghost that only Tatum's character can see in the movie, which was created by the duo and is directed by Tatum. This isn't your typical haunting, though. This is a ghost story about friendship, and how being a friend may occasionally get a little annoying, rather than exploring pain or inspiring terror. If those seem like insignificant stakes, they perhaps are. The Civil Dead excels at providing a good time, which is essential for a decent buddy movie. It's a really promising debut that is enormously amusing and beautifully eccentric.

If you haven't watched Godland—and chances are, you haven't—I'm scared that my mentions of the movie may discourage you from seeing it. It lacks stars, is set in the late 1800s, and examines colonialism, religion, and mortality in depth. Get my meaning? But please, don't let it stop you. The third film by Hlynur Pálmason is far less ominous than the aspects of Iceland that he so masterfully depicts. This is one of the rare movies that genuinely justifies the use of words like "sublime" and "epic," as it tells the narrative of a young Danish priest's perilous trek to a remote area of Iceland. It also has gorgeous photography and is occasionally pretty amusing. Fans of Herzog rejoice.

Lukas Dhont's ability to evocatively convey the magnified sentiments of early adolescence may be due to his approach to teamwork. Dhont has a great eye for how young children are socialized out of their emotional abandonment. The close friendship between best friends Léo and Rémi, both 13 years old, is shattered when they start a new school year because of their growing awareness of how their outward affection is regarded by their peers. As tension grows, their relationship ends tragically because neither of them has the vocabulary or self-awareness to talk about how they are both experiencing. Instead of being unexpected, the stomach-churning shame that mingles with sadness draws power from the ways in which it feels painfully familiar.
