Spanish environment activists slam planned industrial octopus farm

Animal rights activists in Madrid have protested against the world’s first large-scale octopus farm, planned by Spanish seafood company Nueva Pescanova, which is reported to be investing €58 million in the project in the Canary Islands, allegedly designed to produce 3,000 tonnes of octopus per year.

Animalist Party for the Environment (PACMA) members have argued that these particular animals are solitary and need their space and their freedom of movement, and so the farm would be ‘tremendously hostile and harmful for them.’ Scientists and animal welfare organizations have also slammed the plans, criticizing Nueva Pescanova’s suggested method of breeding the animals as cruel.
