Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg Calls for $20 Million Investment in Gender-Inclusive Crash Test Dummies

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has requested a $20 million allocation of taxpayer funds to incorporate female crash dummies in vehicle safety testing. The proposal is aimed at addressing gender disparities among crash victims.

Buttigieg presented this initiative as part of the Department of Transportation's (DOT) 2024 fiscal budget. The inclusion of female dummies in safety tests is expected to help reduce gender inequality in automotive safety outcomes.

This push for more inclusive crash testing comes amidst ongoing concerns over railroad derailments and crumbling infrastructure in the United States. However, several House Democrats have already expressed their support for Buttigieg's gender-inclusive crash test dummy proposal.

During a recent House Appropriations subcommittee meeting, Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) applauded Buttigieg's commitment to promoting equity through the use of female crash test dummies. DeLauro emphasized that this initiative is a significant stride in combating gender inequity in vehicle safety testing.
