The Face of Christ (1649) is an engraving by the French artist Claude Mellan (1598-1688). The remarkable thing about this engraving is that it is created from a single spiraling line of 150 meters long, starting at the tip of Jesus’ nose. The engraving is also known as the Veil of Veronica (or the Sudarium of Saint Veronica), referring to the cloth used by Veronica to wipe the face of Jesus on his way to his crucifixion. Mellan created it using a burin (a chisel-like tool) to engrave into a copperplate. He changed the angle and pressure of the burin to make the line thicker/thinner and lighter/darker in certain places to create the face.
