This is the dramatic moment an officer saves a man from a sinking vehicle after he apparently drove his car into a canal.

The rescue reportedly took place in the city of Sunnyside, in Yakima County, Washington State, USA, on Monday, 17th April.

Body-worn footage shows the officer - identified only as Christensen - smashing up the rear windshield with what seems to be a gardening hoe to help the trapped man escape.

The officer then grabs hold of the man and the two toss the man's electronics to the ground before entering the water and later getting to dry land.

The Sunnyside Police Department said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: "Yesterday [Mon], Deputies and the Sunnyside Police Department were sent to 500 Snipes Canal Rd for a report of a vehicle floating in the canal.

"While en route, we learned the vehicle started sinking and a person was trapped inside the car.

"Sunnyside Officer Christensen arrived before us and rescued the man from the sinking vehicle with the help of the fire department.

"This video shows him saving the man's life.

"Thank you Officer Christensen for your heroic efforts and for being a bright spot in your community."
