The History of the AK-74 🔫

Brief history of the Kalashnikov and the current variant commonly seen in Russia and Ukraine today: The AK74 with its 5.45x39mm cartridge, developed after Russia analyzed the American M16's used in Vietnam and saw the benefit of the low recoil, smaller, lighter, higher velocity 5.56x45mm cartridge over the AK47's slower and heavier 7.62x39mm cartridge.

The Russians learned and adopted the philosophy behind the American 5.56x45mm, "It's better to wound than kill" as a wounded soldier needs to be carried to safety by 2 or more soldiers, removing multiple men from the battlefield with a single bullet. A wounded man may require weeks, months, even a year of treatment and physical therapy, requiring multiple medical personnel, costing the enemy vastly more money and resources to treat them as opposed to simply burying a dead man.

The 7n6 round is the most common 5.45x39mm cartridge used by Russia and Ukraine today. A slender, elongated bullet with a bimetal jacket, hollow nose and a mild steel penetrator. Endowing this bullet type with the ability to penetrate light barriers, but also deform when it hits a soft target, causing the bullet to violently tumble, achieving superior wounding ballistics compared to the AK47's 7.62x39mm cartridge, which has a tendency to over penetrate, not deform, 'ice picking' targets with a clean in and out hole with minimal tissue damage.

The smaller, lighter, high velocity 5.45mm round has several advantages over the previous 7.62mm round. More ammunition can be carried by infantry due to its lighter weight, and a faster bullet has a flatter trajectory, achieving hits at longer distances with minimal compensation for bullet drop. It's also lower recoil, allowing the soldier to stay on target easier, especially on full auto fire.

When Russia used these AK74's in the Afghan war, Mujahedeen dubbed the 5.45x39mm cartridge, "The Poison Bullet" due to the prolonged agony a fighter hit with one would face before finally succumbing to their wounds.

The Soviets ditched the AK47, adopted the AK74 for their infantry, and the rest is history...

Today the AK47 is commonly seen in poorer African and Middle Eastern countries, where outdated USSR surplus weapon stock was sold for cheap following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Former Soviet satellite nations in Eastern European tend to use the newer AK74.
