🇱🇧 Anti-government protest in Beirut

Yesterday, in the Lebanese capital, an anti-government protest took place: hundreds of government officials, including retired officers, gathered in front of the government building in Beirut and expressed their dissatisfaction with the economic and social conditions of life.

Protesters criticized the authorities for the lack of action to overcome the financial crisis, which has resulted in the lion's share of the population losing all their savings accumulated over the years.

The participants of the protest demanded an increase in medical insurance, as well as to begin paying salaries and pensions based on the dollar exchange rate instead of paying in the constantly fluctuating and depreciating national currency.

To disperse the demonstration, police officers used smoke bombs, rubber batons, and tear gas. Using shields, the security forces tried to force angry people out of the city center, detaining dozens of people along the way.

One of the largest financial crises in Lebanon has been going on for four years now and has led to impoverishment of more than 80% of the population. Against this background, anti-government protests have become a norm in the country, with retired military personnel taking an active part.

Attempts by international organizations to improve the Lebanese economy have not been successful. Without effective reforms, the country may get stuck in an endless crisis with regular mass unrest.
