In 1945, freed from German occupation, Czechoslovakia expelled thousands of its citizens, Germans. Many were murdered. The repercussions on both sides could still be felt in 2002, as surviving Sudeten Germans attempted to use the Czech Republic's bid for EU membership to raise the issue of reparations.
