A kolam which enjoys a kingly status among all Padayani kolams is the Kaalan Kolam. The performer needs a great sense of rhythm and flexibility and in most places it is performed by the master artist. The kolam wears a crown shaped headgear with three or five faces.

Padayani, also known Padeni, is a traditional folk dance and a ritual art from the central portion of the Indian state of Kerala. A ceremonial dance involving masks, it is an ancient ritual performed in Bhagavati temples. The dance is performed in honor of Bhadrakaali. Meaning, a 'row of warriors', Padayani is an art form that blends all music, dance, theatre, satire, facial masks, and paintings. It is part of worship of Bhadrakali and is staged in temples dedicated to the goddess from mid-December to mid-May. Padayani is unique to central Travancore, comprising the Pathanamthitta and Kottayam districts of Kerala. It is also performed in adjoining regions of Kollam, Alappuzha districts. Padayani is regarded as a remnant of the Dravidian forms of worship that existed before the advent of Brahmanism.

Padayani is like Theyyam in north Kerala. The percussion instruments used in Patayani are patayani thappu, chenda, para and kumbham.

കേരളത്തിന്റെ പ്രാചീന സംസ്കാരത്തിന്റെ പ്രതീകങ്ങളിലൊന്നായി ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചുവരുന്ന ഒരു അനുഷ്ഠാനകലയാണ് പടയണി. പടേനി എന്നും ഇതിനു വിളിപ്പേരുണ്ട്. നാടക സ്വഭാവം ഉള്ള കലയാണ് ഇത്. വിളവെടുപ്പിനോടനുബന്ധിച്ച് ആണ് ഇത് നടത്തിവരുന്നത്. ഒരു ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ മൊത്തം ജനങ്ങളെയും വസൂരിയിൽ നിന്നും മറ്റും രക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിനായാണ് ഇത് നടത്തിവരുന്നത് എന്നതിനാൽ നാനാജാതിമതസ്ഥരുടേയും പങ്കാളിത്തം പടയണിയിൽ കാണുവാനാകും. കവുങ്ങിൻ‌പാളകളിൽ നിർ‌മ്മിച്ച വലുതും ചെറുതുമായ അനേകം കോലങ്ങളേന്തി തപ്പ്, കൈമണി, ചെണ്ട തുടങ്ങിയ വാദ്യങ്ങളുടെ ശബ്ദമേളങ്ങൾ‌ക്കിടയിൽ തീച്ചൂട്ടുകളുടേയും പന്തങ്ങളുടേയും വെളിച്ചത്തിൽ തുള്ളിയുറയുന്നതാണ് ഇതിന്റെ അവതരണരീതി. ഓരോ ദേവതയ്ക്കും ഓരോ വേഷവും രൂപവുമുണ്ട്. ആ രൂപങ്ങള്‍ വരച്ചെടുക്കുമ്പോള്‍ കോലങ്ങളായി. രണ്ടഗ്രങ്ങളും വട്ടത്തില്‍ വെട്ടിയെടുത്ത് മിനുക്കിയ പാളയിലാണ് കോലങ്ങള്‍ വരച്ചെടുക്കുന്നത്. ഏറെ പാളകള്‍ ആവശ്യമായ കോലങ്ങളുണ്ട്. പ്രധാനമായും ഭദ്രകാളി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ, കാവുകളിൽ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ ആണ് പടയണി നടക്കുന്നത്. മധ്യ തിരുവിതാംകൂറിലെ പത്തനംതിട്ട, കോട്ടയം, കൊല്ലം, ആലപ്പുഴ എന്നീ ജില്ലകളിലായി പരന്നുകിടക്കുന്ന പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ പടയണി നടത്താറുണ്ട്. കേന്ദ്ര ടൂറിസം വകുപ്പിന് കീഴിൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന കടമ്മനിട്ട പടയണി ഗ്രാമം കേരളത്തിലെ പ്രമുഖ പടയണി പഠന പരിശീലന കേന്ദ്രമാണ്.
