The Colonial Pipeline cyberattack was a ransomware attack that targeted the computer systems of Colonial Pipeline, which is responsible for supplying nearly half of the fuel consumed on the East Coast of the United States. The attack occurred on May 7, 2021, and resulted in the shutdown of the pipeline for several days, causing widespread fuel shortages and panic buying.

The attackers, believed to be a group of Russian hackers known as DarkSide, used a ransomware called "Double extortion" to encrypt Colonial Pipeline's computer systems and demand a ransom payment of 75 bitcoins, which was worth approximately $5 million at the time.

Colonial Pipeline ultimately paid the ransom, but it's unclear how much they paid. The US government later recovered some of the ransom payment, though the exact amount is not publicly known.

The attack highlighted the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to cyberattacks and sparked renewed calls for improved cybersecurity measures and greater cooperation between the public and private sectors. It also led to increased scrutiny of the use of cryptocurrency in ransomware attacks, as the attackers demanded payment in bitcoin.
