Renfield is the story of Dracula’s servant Robert Montague Renfield and his desperate attempt to rid himself of his emotionally abusive vampire master.

There’s a really smart, thematically sound, weighty emotional story here about the nature of negative codependent relationships, you know, those couples none of us understand where someone is clearly being manipulated emotionally and/or physically and we’re all thinking: JUST LEAVE THE GUY, or, JUST BREAK UP WITH HER! Or as the woman in this movie puts it, an addiction to a-holes.

Drawing an analogy from those elements to the relationship between the prince of darkness and his familiar is actually a phenomenal premise for a classic vampire movie. But even then it would just be a subplot in a bigger story.

There’s so little to work with that they HAD to make this a big dumb action comedy. The action is so over the top that it is bloody funny, but overall the movie underwhelms because it compensates a lack of material with an overabundance of single dimensional characters loosely plugged into a vague world ending plot. A simple and clever short film about Renfield at a support group would have sufficed.
