Researchers have known for years that lupus appears in people with a genetic predisposition for the disease, if they are exposed to environmental triggers. However, the exact triggers and how they result in lupus remain an enigma. There is growing evidence that people exposed to traumatic stress, especially those who develop PTSD, are at increased risk for autoimmune diseases such as lupus. Patients with lupus have reported for years the link between stressful situations and lupus flares. But what is the relation between stress and the etiology of lupus? This video examines the role of stress in lupus and the possible mechanisms involved in its possible role as a causal factor for lupus.
