The Indian pond heron is a small heron. It originates from the Old World and breeds in southern Iran and as far east as the Indian subcontinent, Burma and Sri Lanka. They are widespread and common, but easily overlooked when stalking prey at the edge of small bodies of water, or even when they roost close to human habitation.
