The W113 is recognized as one of the worlds most perfectly proportioned sports cars. In 1963, Mercedes Benz unveiled the W113, also known as the 230 SL, at the Geneva Motor Show. The car was intended to replace both the iconic 300 SL and the smaller 190 SL, but it was much more than a mere replacement. It marked a significant change in the Super Light line, as the lead engineer, Fritz Nallinger, aimed to provide the American market with a combination of luxury and sportiness that he termed "motoring happiness." The 230SL proved to be a sales success, exceeding the best results of the previous 190SL by immediately doubling its sales figures. It also became a landmark design that has undeniable collector appeal.
One of the most notable features of the 230SL was the removable hardtop designed by Paul Bracq. It had a slightly concave center section with raised edges, which improved cabin visibility and accessibility. This feature also gave the car a unique look that earned it the nickname "Pagoda." The car's styling was elegantly proportioned and not overly aggressive, continuing the Mercedes Benz tradition of impeccable build quality.
The car's power came from a robust and reliable fuel-injected straight-six engine factory-installed and paired with a supple and fully-synchronized four-speed manual transmission. The W113 was an early adapter of safety features such as planned deformation zones to protect passengers and the absence of sharp edges in the design. The engine in this example is smooth, with good power delivery, and the handling is tight. The car has a top speed of 125 MPH, thanks to a high compression head and new 6-nozzle Bosch fuel injection. The car also features front disc brakes and power-assisted rear drums to ensure safe driving.
Collectors appreciate the attention the 230SL receives, and the availability of parts and the well-established and enthusiastic Mercedes Benz owner community opens up a world of Collector Car opportunities to new owners.
