"I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell."

Trees are my cowbell.

I got 99 problems but a tree ain't one.

So I just ordered a ton of trees and now I need to figure out where to put them. Come walk with me on my lunch as I show some of my thought process figuring out where to expand the food forest.

Typically we want to expand forests from forests. In nature, the 2 ways forests expand are from ecological succession (Bare soil - Weed pit - Grass land - Brushland - Emergent forest - Old growth forest), or from the edge of an existing forest. The former (ecological succession) takes hundreds to thousands of years. The latter (expanding from the edge of an existing forest) happens every day, very quickly.

When we find where we want to expand, we need to be looking at sun exposure (at multiple times per day), sun exposure, landscape and access. Everyone knows I'm a big fan of contour and creating passive self-sufficient low maintenance systems. So for me looking where I can expand swales is always a high priority. Looking where I have water catchment and natural funneling, then trapping that water, spreading it out and sinking it - that's how you make a system of fruit trees where you never have to work.

I had originally planned on planting out old-man walking trail, but I actually think it would be best to let that area sit for a full year before planting into it. So now I need to find where I'm going to put all these new trees that I impulse bought.

How you can support me - including ways that don't cost you anything to do:

First, like, subscribe and hit the notification bell. I don't say this in videos often because it's annoying, but it works. The YouTube algorithm uses this stuff to push my videos to new people who may not even heard of permaculture. The best way to help me isn't to send me money, but to help me grow the channel. Share these videos on social media and help get more people curious about homesteading and changing their lives.

Doing shopping on Amazon? If you start your shopping by clicking on my Amazon affiliate link, it costs you nothing (not even a penny) but I receive a small commission of anything you buy. The link here takes you to my website blog on my favorite permaculture books. However, if you click on any link there as your starting point, then go buy ANYTHING, it helps support me.
