In the old days of Liverpool England, three dock workers - Ned Wilson, Bill Hutchinson, and Ian Clayton - would regularly gather at Molly's tavern to play draw poker. One day, a mysterious man with an eye-patch named Robert Edwards joins their game and proceeds to win all their money with seeming ease. Ned accuses Robert of cheating and shoots and kills him, publicly declaring that he was a cheat.

Ned declines the idea of splitting the cheater's winnings among themselves, saying it is bad luck. He proposes they need to break the curse by finding an honest man to win back the money from. They come across a young man who has little poker experience at the local church who agrees to play with Robert's shillings. To their amazement, he continues to win with remarkable hands.

The men eventually lose all their money and Ned accuses him of cheating, but the others are convinced they lost fairly. The young man explains that he learned not to cheat from his father, who lost his left-eye as a result of cheating. The young man's fathers name is Robert Edwards.
