Mindflayers use their tadpoles to preproduce as can be seen in this updated cinematic of the process. Through a process called ceramorphisis a mind flayer parasite transforms its host into one of the feared illithids after seven days. Somehow now the illithids are now able to trigger the transformation almost instantaneously.
