The human heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body. It is located in the chest, behind the breastbone, and is about the size of a fist. The heart is divided into four chambers: the right atrium, the left atrium, the right ventricle, and the left ventricle.

Blood enters the heart through the superior and inferior vena cava, and flows into the right atrium. From there, it passes through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle. The right ventricle pumps the blood to the lungs, where it picks up oxygen and releases carbon dioxide.

Oxygen-rich blood returns to the heart through the pulmonary veins, and flows into the left atrium. From there, it passes through the mitral valve into the left ventricle. The left ventricle pumps the oxygen-rich blood out of the heart and into the aorta, which distributes it throughout the body.

The heart is surrounded by a sac called the pericardium, which helps protect it and keep it in place. It is also connected to a network of blood vessels, including the coronary arteries and veins, which supply it with oxygen and nutrients.
