Lying & the Bible

The Bible contains several passages that specifically address lying and deceit. For example, one of the Ten Commandments, which are considered foundational moral principles in Christianity, is "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor" (Exodus 20:16, ESV). This commandment prohibits lying or giving false testimony in legal or moral matters.

In addition, the Bible emphasizes the importance of truthfulness and honesty in various other passages. Proverbs 12:22 (ESV) states, "Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight." Ephesians 4:25 (ESV) also exhorts believers to "put away falsehood and speak the truth with [their] neighbor." Furthermore, Jesus, who is considered the central figure in Christianity, emphasized the importance of truthfulness in his teachings, saying, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life" (John 14:6, ESV).

It's important to note that while lying is generally considered sinful in Christianity, forgiveness and repentance are also central themes in the Bible. The Bible teaches that everyone is imperfect and prone to sin, and that through repentance, confession, and seeking forgiveness, one can be reconciled with God and others.
