In All Things Trust Him

“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.” John 14:1

Is your heart troubled? Are you weary and burdened? Are you at a place where you just don’t know what to do?

In our lives sorrow and pain will visit us occasionally. It is inevitable. In fact, they will never leave us completely until that bright and happy morning when our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ makes all things new.

When trouble upsets us and things seem so hard, the tendency of some would be to get angry with God and blame Him for their unhappiness. After all, He is sovereign. He said “All power is given to me in heaven and on earth.” So where is He? Why doesn’t He do something?

This message was delivered on Palm Sunday, the day in history when Jesus entered Jerusalem, riding on a donkey. The crowd was ecstatic, and they wanted to make Him King right then and there. They were at a very low place in our history as a people and they were under an oppressive government, as we are today. They shouted Hosanna!

“On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.” John 12:12-13

Adam Clarke comments on this word Hosanna, “When persons applied to the king for help, or for a redress of grievances, they used the word hosanna, or rather from the Hebrew HOSHIAH NA! Save now! or, Save, we beseech thee! — redress our grievances, and give us help from oppression! Thus both the words and actions of the people prove that they acknowledged Christ as their king, and looked to him for deliverance. How easily might he have assumed the sovereignty at this time, had he been so disposed!”

How it must have taken the wind out of their sails when, within just one week’s time, He would be crucified! For all they knew, they would be next! Especially after making such a fuss over Him as He rode into town, laying their coats on the ground for His ride to walk upon, praising Him and waving palm branches! “Blessed is he who comes in the Name of the Lord!”

They didn’t realize that it had to be so — that through that this darkest of all days, He would bring everlasting light! — that through His willing sacrifice and His death on the cross, we would have everlasting life!

Dear Christian, in the hard times and in all things . . . trust Him!

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5

“Be still, and know that I am God . . .” Psalms 46:10

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
