Who Is Worthy Enough? | AS BOLD AS LIONS DEVOTIONAL | May 3, 2023

Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners. Mark 2:17

When the Pharisees saw the followers of Jesus and those He chose to hang out with, they were very disappointed. There were expectations of what the Messiah would be and how he would act. Jesus pushed the boundaries time and time again when He chose to pick disciples who didn’t seem worthy enough. And He hung around people who were obviously sinners. The Pharisees, being legalistic to a fault, questioned why Jesus would allow Himself to be seen with such bad influences. After all, didn’t He understand His associations didn’t line up with how the Messiah should conduct himself?

We too can allow ourselves to question who is worthy enough of Jesus’ touch. The Pharisees didn’t like this idea of the Messiah because it didn’t fit neatly inside the box they had built. Jesus pushed their boundaries enough to make them upset over what ministry should look like. We can do the same when we question whether or not God can reach someone. In the end, we know it is up to us to scatter the seed of His word. Some ground will be willing to receive it and bear fruit. Other ground will not. But it didn’t stop Jesus from telling everyone the Good News; whether rich or poor, high social status or low, man or woman, or any color or race. In the end, none of us are worthy enough for Him. But He adopts us into His family and gives us a new heart. From there, He asks us to “Go and make disciples of ALL nations.”

Question for today: If I’m honest today, who have I deemed less than worthy of receiving Christ? How can I pray for that person today?

Pray: Lord I pray that you would soften my heart to the lost (especially this particular person). I ask that my heart would be transformed in the process.
