This is the site of camp Griffin, where the fifth Vermont volunteers were in camps late in 1861 at the outset of the American Civil War. A photograph was taken that shows Colonel Louis Addison Grant, otherwise known as the little grandpa mounted on his horse in front of an outcropping of boulders. Grant would later go on to be awarded the medal of honor, and was brevetted a general. The boulders unbelievably are still there along Kurtz Road in the town of McLean Virginia.
