9 MAJOR Signs Of Liver Disease | What To Look For!
The liver is a crucial organ in our bodies that performs various vital functions from filtering toxins to producing bile which aids in the digestion of food. Unfortunately liver disease can compromise these functions and have serious consequences on our overall health. That's why it's important to be aware of the warning signs. In this video we'll be discussing the 9 skin signs of liver disease that you should be aware of.
Yellowing of the Skin and Eyes (Jaundice):
Jaundice is one of the most common and noticeable signs of liver disease and it are a result of a buildup of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced when red blood cells break down and it's normally processed by the liver and eliminated from the body. However when the liver is not functioning properly bilirubin accumulates in the blood and causes jaundice.
Bruising and Bleeding Easily:
Liver disease can have a significant impact on the body's ability to produce blood-clotting proteins, such as clotting factors and platelets. This reduction in the production of these essential proteins can lead to a condition called coagulopathy which can result in easy bruising and bleeding. People with liver disease may experience spontaneous bruising, even from minor injuries and experience prolonged bleeding from cuts and wounds.
Itchy Skin (Pruritus)
Itching, also known as pruritus, is a common symptom of liver disease and affects many people with this condition. It is caused by the buildup of bile in the skin which is a result of the liver not functioning properly. Bile is a yellowish-green fluid produced by the liver to help digest fats and excrete waste products. When the liver is not functioning correctly, bile can accumulate in the skin, causing itching and discomfort. This itching can range from mild to severe and can be extremely distressing for those affected by it.
Darkening of the Nails:
The nails may become dark and discolored due to the accumulation of bilirubin, a yellow pigment produced by the liver. Bilirubin is usually processed and excreted by the liver, but when liver function is impaired, bilirubin can build up in the blood, causing discoloration in the nails. This discoloration is called nail melanonychia and can range from light yellow to a dark brown or black. The affected nails may also become brittle and prone to splitting.
Fluid Retention:
Liver disease can lead to fluid buildup in different parts of the body, most commonly in the legs, ankles, feet and the abdomen. This condition is called edema and is caused by the liver's inability to remove excess fluids from the body. As the liver becomes less able to perform its functions, it can result in a buildup of fluid, leading to swelling in different areas of the body. In some cases, this swelling can be severe and uncomfortable, causing skin to stretch and become tight.
Spider Angiomas:
Spider angiomas are a common sign of liver disease that can appear anywhere on the skin, but most often appear on the face, neck, arms and upper trunk. They are small, red blood vessels that appear in clusters, giving them a spider-like appearance. They are caused by the dilation of tiny blood vessels near the surface of the skin and are a result of changes in the way that the liver regulates blood flow.
Palmar Erythema:
Palmar erythema is a redness of the palms of the hands that can be a sign of liver disease. This skin condition occurs when the blood vessels in the palms dilate and become more visible, resulting in a red, flushed appearance. This is usually a result of increased levels of estrogen in the blood which can occur as a result of liver disease.
Acne-like Rash:
A rash resembling acne, also known as liver spots or hyperpigmentation, is a common skin sign of liver disease. The appearance of these dark, discolored spots on the skin is caused by an increase in the production of melanin, a pigment responsible for skin color. In individuals with liver disease, the liver may not be able to effectively process and remove excess melanin, leading to the development of liver spots.
Dry, Scaly Skin:
Liver disease can cause dry, scaly skin due to the decreased production of natural oils by the liver. Our skin is covered in oils and other natural substances that help keep it moisturized and healthy. When the liver is not functioning properly, it can't produce these natural oils, leading to dry and scaly skin.
