The motion was passed after accusations that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak supported “far-right attacks” on drag queen storytime and the murder of a trans-identifying teenager. The NEU aims to support all LGBT+ students and counter the influence of online personalities like Andrew Tate. However, the decision has been criticized by conservative organizations and members of parliament for disregarding safeguarding principles. This measure was introduced after the U.K. government blocked a Scottish measure to change how people officially alter their designated gender.
