“Mother Nurture”
by Greg “Craola” Simkins
from
“The Scared Scouts Guide to the Outside”

As the White Rabbit has the power to let others into Wonderland, so Mother Nurture has the gift of opening passages to and from The Outside. Not just from ours, but from many worlds. Her friends the Starry Knights have given her a special key and she has invited the weird and strange from places far and near to become inhabitants in this place where dreams come true. Beware though, because along with dreams come nightmares. It is important to align yourself with those on the side of good and stay away from the path of the Night Knight. Hopefully this welcome committee will lead you in the right direction as you acclimate to the atmosphere and become accustomed to the weirdness of it all. The Bluejay, Breeze, who led Ralf to this place was just the first of many “Dragon Birds” he encountered on his journey to become the White Knight. All the birds are on the side of good and are increasingly in danger of the wrath of Xander Sneill, the Night Knight. He is always in search of their eggs so as to destroy them. Thank goodness for Mother Nurture and her way with enlisting heroes into her mismatched bands of sell swords with the purpose of protecting the eggs of these prized creatures.
Mother Nurture was the dream of a particular young girl named Sally Ruffleford who had gone missing years before Ralf had entered the Outside in search of his brother Crumbs. You may recall the poem that children chanted around town about Sally:

"Some say Sally Ruffleford
flew to outer space.
No one could quite explain it,
but she left the human race.
No note was left.
No not a clue.
We all hope Sally's
not Sally stew.
We're all glad mommy Ruffleford
packed her bag with mace.

Some say Sally Ruffleford
ran into a bear.
A tasty chubby morsel
topped with curly hair.
But there is no bear,
none has been seen.
too bad poor Sally
was not so lean.
We hope she tasted badly
if she was eaten by a bear.

Some Say Sally Ruffleford
fell into a well.
At least she'd have fresh water there
too bad there'd be that smell.
Of all those kids who'd fell there too
Way back when, ten years or two.
We all hope Sally brought a lunch if she fell into a well

Some Say Sally Ruffleford
did this or did that.
but we all know what happened.
as was told us by a cat.
You see, poor little sally found a trail
that certainly did excite her
and as this trail came to an end...
She turned into a spider.

Now that Ralf has been in the Outside for some time and had adventures of his own, he knows the truth about Sally and how she herself had come to find herself here, snatched out of our world by the Pearl Thief to have her incredibly imaginative dreams harvested as pearls for Xander Sneill’s treasury. What Xander Sneill took for granite was Sally’s strong will and as she escaped his prison full of children in cages, she took this one pearl with her. She placed her pearl in the nest of a large sleeping owl in hope it would hatch. And when it did, her dream of Mother Nurture was born.
Now Nurture spends her days and nights looking for lonely souls in need of adventure and a place to belong and a place to escape. This place, the Outside, seems like the the perfect place for that.
