Hindu devotees pierce themselves to atone for their sins
Worshippers at the Kalapet Shri Bala Murugan Temple celebrated Panguni Uthiram, a festival celebrating marriage between the gods, but their rituals are anything but romantic. During the festival, worshippers pierce their bodies with hooks which then hang them from cranes, to be paraded around Kalapet. To the participants, this is a ritual of penance; to onlookers it might be painful to watch, but the devotees show no outward signs of discomfort, such is their dedication.
