Before Beyonce first made Grammy history in 2010 as the first female artist to win six Grammy's in one evening, Before there ever was a Destiny’s Child who became the best selling girls group of all time. Before her family put their future on the line in support her talents.

Beyonce first discovered she could sing while enrolled in dance classes, go figure. As a child her parents would charge houseguests $5 a head to watch Beyonce perform, inside their cramped living room and joined her first girl group at the age of nine.

Born Beyonce Gisele Knowles on September 4, 1981, in Houston, Texas. Beyonce got her first name from her mother Tina’s Maiden name, As a young child, Knowles was shy and had few friends with the exception of her younger sister Solange.

She attended St. Mary’s Elementary School where her parents chose to enroll their daughter in dance lessons at the age of seven, in an effort for her to make friends at the very least.

Not only did young Beyonce light up the stage with a new found confidence, in rehearsal a teacher had taken note of her gift of singing, Beyonce had mimicked the teacher singing a song and was able to hit all the high notes. From there singing became her focus over dancing and she would sing in—and winn—local talent contests. Her parents realized that performing made their daughter happy, and that she was gifted enough to maybe have a shot at success.

In 1990, at the age of nine, Beyonce auditioned for a singing group called Girl's Tyme. She earned for herself a spot in the group and began performing with them at local events her cousin, Kelly Rowland was also made a member.
