BEFORE he would follow in his idols footsteps and quit penning his lyrics to paper but instead rely on his memory.
BEFORE he was collaborating with the likes of Rick Ross, Lupe Fiasco, Action Bronson, Mac Miller and J. Cole amongst many others.

Ab-Soul’s entire life has been shaped by music, in fact it was music that put food on the table throughout his youth with his family owning various record shops and record labels around America. As a young buy he dreamt of becoming a basketball star, then at the age of 10, he contracted a rare virus known as Stevens–Johnson syndrome which landed him in the hospital. This would have effects on him for the rest of his life, causing his skin pigmentation to change, most noticeable his lips and left him with weakened vision and light sensitivity. That’s likely why you will always see him rocking some form of shades.

Ab-Soul was born Herbert Anthony Stevens (the fourth) IV on February 23, 1987 in Los Angeles Califonia. Him and his parents soon after relocated to Germany where his father was stationed on a military base. Young Herbert spent his first four years in Germany but eventually his parents split and that’s when him and mom headed back to Carson California to live with her parents. His grandfather has been in the record business since the ‘60s with his own shops and labels.

Herbert’s mother got to work at the family business Magic Disc Music and there young Herbert would show up every day after school to chip in himself. The family wasn’t poor, there was food in the fridge, but they weren’t well off and Ab-Soul had to work hard for anything he wanted.

With all the music in the world at his finger tips his first love was Michael Jackson.

He had interests outside of music, he was obsessed with video games, ninja turtles and basketball – he dreamt of one day making it into the NBA.

But by the age of 10 he realized that this was a fantasy that would never come into fruition. At the age of 10 he was diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson a bacteria virus that is hard to detect, he has since been cured. But permanent damage was done to his skin pigmentation most noticeably around his lips, also his eye sight weakened which continues to deteriorate.
