China sends carrier group off Taiwan coast ahead of US meeting

Tensions are growing ahead of an expected meeting between US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Taiwan's president Tsai Ing-Wen, with concerns China could use it as an excuse for a fresh round of military intimidation. A meeting in Taipei with then-speaker Nancy Pelosi last year led to some of the most aggressive military drills from Beijing across the Taiwan strait on record.
