Before Olajide “JJ” Olatunji would go by the name KSI. Before he would reach over 12 million subscribers on YouTube. Before he became the second most watched YouTube channel in the UK. Before he would release a track called Lamborghini which debuted at number 30 on the UK Charts.

JJ was just a normal kid. He was born in Watford, Hertfordshire England in 1992. His parents are of Nigerian descent. He came into YouTube during a time which he said it was largely still not understood. As he grew so did the platform. Now YouTube has become a major competitor to mainstream radio and television. While KSI’s brand grows his rise to fame has not been without controversy. Due to incidents at a Eurogamer event he was banned from all future conventions and MIcrosoft cut ties with him in 2013 as well. He had to do some growing up and has stated that as he has gotten older he has started to see the lines more clearly. Now he is sitting at the top of YouTube fame with over 12 million subscribers and over 1.5 billion views.

Hey Everyone, I'm Azzy and welcome to Before they were famous, chronicling the life of KSI before his fame.

JJ was born in Watford, Hertfordshire England on June 19, 1993. He has one younger brother Deji, who he has often included in his videos. His brother who has his own channel, Comedy Shorts Gamer. They have said that they have a little sibling rivalry going on and appear on each other’s videos frequently. However, KSI’s presence on YouTube was not made overnight. KSI has said that he was first inspired by YouTubers such as Weepeler and Hjerpseth. He started YouTube back in 2009 under the name KSIOlajiDebt. The name was made up of his Halo Clan Name, his own name, and the name of a British Telecom. He began by uploading FIFA videos to his channel frequently. The videos featured him playing the game and commentating over the footage.

During his First year on youtube, he gained about 7,000 subscribers. During the next year that number tripled. It is easy to see why. On screen he is overconfident, loud, and humorous. He can often be seen trash talking his opponents, making jokes, and breaking things in fits of excitement and rage. Whatever he is doing, it makes for entertaining commentating.

One of his most popular videos was against his Youtube rival Wroetoshaw. The game was played for an extremely rare Pele card on FIFA 14. During the video you can see KSI going crazy as he celebrates the highs and lows of the match before eventually winning the game and securing one of the rarest cards in the game at that time.
