Canada: Justice Minister David Lametti discusses UN declaration action plan at AFN Special Chiefs Assembly - April 5, 2023

At the Assembly of First Nations' Special Chiefs Assembly in Ottawa, Justice Minister David Lametti provides an update on the federal government's work with First Nations on developing an action plan to align Canadian laws with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The minister also takes part in a question-and-answer session. First Nations leaders are meeting from April 5 to 6 to discuss the federal government's draft plan to implement the UN declaration. In September 2021, the UN adopted the declaration that recognizes the rights of Indigenous peoples and provides a global framework to advance their rights in areas including self-determination and self-government.
