Sustainable Living - Hut of Reeds

The Arbore live in Southern Ethiopia and have developed a technique of building large houses from natural materials. Reeds are gathered from the shores of Lake Turkana and carried for many miles before being placed, still in their bundles onto the frame of the house. Building is a community process and shared equally between the men and the women, and the whole house can be built in a single evening, so it is fresh for the newly wedded couple to move into.
After three months a front porch is added which symbolises the fact that the marriage is successful and the family is about to start.
