Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne makes an announcement at the Heidelberg Materials facility in Edmonton on reducing carbon emissions in cement and concrete production. The federal government and the German company have reached a memorandum of understanding to develop a full-scale carbon neutral cement plant at its Edmonton location. The $1.36-billion project will build North America's first carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) system, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 1 million tonnes annually. Heidelberg Materials North America executives Joerg Nixdorf, Chris Ward, David Perkins, Oliver Patsch, and Tim Bestland also speak at the event. Associate Finance Minister and Edmonton Centre MP Randy Boissonnault, Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi, and Alexander First Nation Chief George Arcand Jr. take part as well.
