ALEC depends on the vital contributions made by women. At the close of Women’s History Month, it is appropriate to recognize their work along with the accomplishments of women around the world.
This year’s theme is Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.
Deena Loudon shared with us the devastating toll America’s Fentanyl Overdose Epidemic is having on individuals and families. Deena – who lost her son to a fentanyl overdose – is now an ambassador for Shatterproof – a organization dedicated to building a national movement to treat addiction like the chronic disease it is and offering evidence-based resources for prevention, treatment and recovery.
We also heard this month from Michelle Bekkering – the National Engagement Director for the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition. Bekkering is a longtime advocate for women’s empowerment and equality. She explained how empowering women spurs global economic growth.
Finally, we heard of the toll the Ukraine War is having on the women of that country from Ukrainian Member of Parliament Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze.
We’ll also talk with Gabriella Beaumont-Smith – a research analyst with the free-market CATO Institute about the root causes of the ongoing baby formula shortage. She says government trade restrictions limit our ability to import formula – hurting women and children.
At ALEC, we are inspired by these exemplary women who are making a difference in their own neighborhoods and on the world stage.
