Brown noise is often used for its calming and relaxing effects. It is sometimes used as a sleep aid or to mask unwanted sounds. For example, a 2017 study published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing found that listening to brown noise for 20 minutes reduced blood pressure and heart rate in participants, indicating a relaxation response.
Brown noise has also been shown to have a calming effect on the nervous system. A 2013 study published in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America found that exposure to brown noise reduced sympathetic nervous system activity, which is responsible for the body's stress response.
