There have been several Avengers movies, so it depends on which one you are referring to. However, I'll assume you're talking about the original Avengers movie from 2012.

At the end of the movie, the Avengers team successfully defeats the villainous Loki and his alien army that had invaded New York City. The team manages to close a portal that was allowing the aliens to enter Earth, but not before a nuclear missile is launched at the city as a last resort.

Iron Man, who had flown the missile through the portal and managed to divert it away from the city, falls back to Earth and is presumed dead. However, he is saved by the Hulk and brought back to safety. The team then goes their separate ways, but not before Thor takes Loki back to Asgard as a prisoner.

The movie ends with a mid-credits scene showing the villain Thanos being informed of the Avengers' defeat and the prospect of having to deal with them himself in the future.
