As a “kumu aʻo ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi”, a Hawaiian language teacher, Iʻd like to share some words, meanings & phrases. Hawaiian language is a Polynesian language. Post-contact, Hawaiian language was discouraged as was the cultural traditions & practices. It was becoming extinct. Through the efforts of teachers, musicians, traditional navigators, native speakers, etc., a renaissance of the language & culture traditions & practices were bringing life back into the land & her kānaka maoli, native people. Other Polynesians, as well, we’re doing the same. Today, we celebrate the knowledge & use of the Hawaiian language within schools, music, history, the fine arts, and most importantly in hula, the art of learning of dancing & history & story telling. E ola mau ka ‘ōlelo Hawai’i - Long live the Hawaiian language. Aloha & Mahalo.
