ABSTAIN FROM GETTING AMBUSHED BY LUST JESUS SAYS THAT IS VITAL

Peter warns that our lusts are constantly seeking to ambush us, trying to find opportunities to defeat us.

As Christians, we have three perspectives that shape our obligations.
First, we are pilgrims, recognizing that our true citizenship is in heaven (vv. 11, 12).
Second, we are citizens of a secular society (vv. 13-17).
Third, we are servants (vv. 18-20).

Rather than simply abstaining from fleshly lusts, we should actively hold ourselves away from them.

To have a positive impact on the world, Christians must exercise discipline in both inward and private matters by avoiding the desires of the fallen nature. Galatians 5:19-21 makes it clear that "fleshly lusts" refer to much more than just sexual temptations.

Our fleshly lusts are at war with our soul, personified as an army of rebels or guerrillas who relentlessly seek to destroy our joy, peace, and usefulness as Christians. This warfare imagery is echoed in 1 Peter 4:2-3.
