Moose undergo a single annual molt, which takes place during the beginning of spring. During winter, they sport a coat comprising long, hollow guard hairs measuring up to six inches on their neck and shoulders, as well as a dense undercoat. As spring sets in, their dull and worn winter fur is shed, and they acquire a fresh coat of short, shiny, and dark hairs.
