Identifying the dead: Lugansk’s monumental task

It has been months since the Lugansk People’s Republic was officially liberated and voted to join Russia, but one task is still ongoing, and may be ongoing for some time to come: identifying the dead.

As the Ukrainian military withdrew, they fired indiscriminately at the oncoming pro-Russian forces, with no regard for who they hit. Entire towns were reduced to rubble, and swathes of land reduced to craters, and littered with even more unexploded rounds.

Anna Soroka is heading up the group working to search for the bodies, and she describes the international, monumental and solemn task that awaits her.
