The unsettling mystery of the Hinterkaifeck murder.

The Hinterkaifeck murders are one of Germany's oldest unsolved murder cases. In 1922, a German family and their new maid were brutally murdered at their remote farm. The family had been lured to the barn one by one and killed, and then the maid and the youngest child were killed in their beds. Despite interviewing several suspects, the police never found the killer(s). The crime scene was contaminated by dozens of people before the lead investigator arrived from Munich. Forensic testing was virtually non-existent at the time, but autopsies revealed the family died by blunt force trauma to the head, likely from a pickaxe or mattock. The murders occurred after a number of strange events at the farm, including the previous maid quitting because she heard footsteps in the attic. Theories include incestuous relationships and Lorenz Schlittenbauer's potential involvement. To this day, the case remains unsolved, and the killer(s) remain(s) unknown.
