Kids in the Kitchen: Importance of Having Kids Learn about Ingredients and Cooking in the Kitchen

In this video, we had an impromptu cooking session with the kids. Our kids LOVE to play cook and they play kitchen with their toy foods. I have them try to help out in the kitchen when possible. It takes a lot more time and it’s a lot more of a mess but it’s so important to have our kids in the kitchen.

It helps them to learn cooking skills but it more importantly, teaches them how foods are made and what ingredients it takes to make food. It also teaches them to have appreciation for foods and have an emotional connection with the foods prepared. Even though some of the pancakes were a little too cooked and some were broken, they knew where exactly the pancakes came from and when exactly the pancakes broke.

They also saw how much butter and eggs it takes to make pancakes and the visualization really helped them to understand the kinds of processing it requires to have baked goods that are shelf-stable. Of course, they don’t fully understand but having them exposed at this young of an age and having them understand that bad oils can cause “fire” in their bodies is key.

It helps them remember these moments when they’re older. You can’t shake what you learn and especially if pandora’s box is open.

What was really eye opening for me was when the kids continued to mimic and play by themselves. See what they say to each other. It’s powerful.

Try cooking with your kids at home. It’s an incredible learning experience for the kids and a memorable time for the family.

The filming was impromptu so it’s not filmed ideally for YouTube in some instances.

PS. If you’re wondering, Caleb is newly 5 and Aiden is newly 3. They’re both low carbish and heavy meat eaters. Aiden starts his days with nursing and Caleb drinks raw goat’s milk.
