Layering is an essential part of backpacking, regardless of the season. The key is to layer your clothing in a way that allows you to regulate your body temperature and stay comfortable in changing weather conditions. Here are some tips for layering during summer and winter backpacking:

Summer Backpacking Layering:

Base Layer: A lightweight, moisture-wicking shirt and shorts or pants made from synthetic materials or merino wool can help keep you cool and dry.
Mid Layer: In cooler conditions or at night, a lightweight fleece or long-sleeved shirt can provide added warmth without overheating.
Outer Layer: A lightweight rain jacket or windbreaker can protect you from unexpected storms and wind chill.
Winter Backpacking Layering:

Base Layer: Long underwear or base layer made from merino wool or synthetic materials can help insulate you from the cold and wick moisture away from your skin.
Mid Layer: A heavier fleece, softshell, or puffy jacket can provide added warmth, especially during rest breaks or in colder temperatures.
Outer Layer: A waterproof, breathable jacket and pants can protect you from rain and snow, while also providing wind protection.
Additional tips for both seasons:

Avoid cotton clothing as it holds moisture and can leave you feeling damp and chilled.
Bring a warm hat, gloves, and neck gaiter to protect your extremities from the cold.
Consider the length and difficulty of your backpacking trip when selecting your layers.
Always check the weather forecast before you depart and adjust your layering accordingly.
