The incident occurred at the Charlotte Pokemon Regional event, where a player claimed to have been disqualified after nervously laughing while giving their preferred pronoun. The player, who had spent over $1,000 on flights and products for the event, was devastated by the decision and revealed in a twit longer that their weekend had turned to tears as they lost out on $800, flights, and time off school all before they could even make a move. The player had dedicated a lot of time and effort to become a professional in the Pokemon scene, and yet they didn't even get to play a single game because of this incident.

According to the player, when asked for their preferred pronoun, they replied with "um, he or him," before nervously laughing. The judge then said, "I go by they/them, so don't be a jerk about it." This response from the judge has caused controversy, as many people believe that it was the judge who was being a jerk, not the player. Asking someone their pronoun should not be a requirement at an event, and the player should not have been punished for being anxious and nervous about the situation.
