Ma Ying-jeou's Trip to China Represents Taiwans Political Divide - Daveey G IRL EP 11
Ma Ying-jeou is a politician from Taiwan who served as the President of Taiwan from 2008 to 2016. Prior to becoming the President, he served as the Mayor of Taipei and as the Chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT) party.
Regarding his relationship with China, Ma Ying-jeou was known for advocating for closer ties between Taiwan and China during his presidency. He pursued a policy of engagement with China, which included the signing of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) in 2010. This agreement aimed to reduce trade barriers and promote economic cooperation between Taiwan and China.
Ma Ying-jeou also met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2015, which was the first meeting between the leaders of Taiwan and China since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949. However, his policy of rapprochement with China was also met with criticism from those who believed that it was undermining Taiwan's sovereignty and independence.
The opposition to Ma Ying-jeou's policies and leadership came mainly from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which is a center-left political party in Taiwan that advocates for Taiwanese independence. The DPP criticized Ma Ying-jeou for being too friendly towards China and for not doing enough to promote Taiwan's sovereignty.
In 2014, the Sunflower Student Movement emerged in Taiwan, which was a student-led protest movement that opposed a proposed trade agreement between Taiwan and China. The movement was seen as a response to Ma Ying-jeou's pro-China policies and was supported by the DPP.
In the 2016 presidential election, the DPP candidate Tsai Ing-wen defeated the KMT candidate Eric Chu, who was seen as Ma Ying-jeou's political successor. Tsai Ing-wen has since pursued a policy of maintaining a "status quo" in relations with China, which means that she is neither seeking independence nor unification with China.
