One might assume that there are enough shark attack movies out there, but occasionally a good one makes it to the big screen. The Meg was a huge commercial success even though it took a while to be released, giving fans hope for a forthcoming sequel. A new filmmaker is behind the sequel Meg 2: The Trench, which has the same action-packed enormous shark scenes.

With a $130–170 million budget, The Meg made $530 million in its first year of release in 2018. Although it received poor reviews from critics, movie vastly exceeded predictions at the box office. Jason Statham had his best opening weekend outside of a major franchise thanks to it. Given that level of achievement, a follow-up was required.

The Meg 2 Must Be Even Larger Than The Original One (Related)

Steve Alten published Meg: A Novel of Profound Horror in 1997. At least six sequels and a seventh are planned because it was moderately popular. Disney came in to buy the rights as soon as the book was published. Capitalizing on the simultaneous success of Jurassic Park and Jaws, the pitch was clear. The term "Jurassic Shark" was bandied about carelessly. The original attempt at the screenplay was made by Tom Wheeler, the showrunner of NBC's The Cape, who was swiftly dismissed as a result. The screenwriter of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Jeffrey Boam, had the same fate. In 2005, with Speed and Twister director Jan De Bont at the helm, the movie came very close to being made. The movie version that blew up left the adaptation of Alten's book in development limbo. Before The Meg reared its huge head once more, it had been ten years since Eli Roth, of all people, had been in talks to helm the film. The film was finally made by National Treasure director Jon Turteltaub, who took over for Roth.

When Meg
Honestly, Meg 2: The Trench's production can't possibly be as problematic as that of its predecessor. Meg 2, which will be released on August 4th, 2023, almost exactly five years after the first movie's debut, will easily surpass the 21-year timetable of the original. The rights to the novel were acquired by Warner Bros., who has been trying to turn this into a successful franchise. Like Steve Alten, who thinks that if the movies are made well, his books could lead to a multi-billion dollar media empire. About three months after the original movie's debut, executive producer Catherine Xujun Ying began discussing the follow-up. Statham and the scripting team of Dean Georgaris, Erich Hoeber, and Jon Hoeber returned to the project in February 2022, and production got underway. Harry Gregson-Williams, a composer, will also make a comeback after creating music for movies like The Last Duel and House of Gucci in the interim. Regrettably, several people were unable to attend the sequel.

Jon Turteltaub has not agreed to direct Meg 2. Ben Wheatley, an English director, has taken his place. High-Rise is likely Wheatley's most well-known movie. J. The 2015 reimagining of J. The 1975 novel by G. Ballard earned positive reviews from reviewers and moviegoers despite not being a huge box office success. The incredibly underappreciated action comedy Free Fire was directed by Wheatley the year after. In essence, it's just one long gunfight with all the realistic details of real-world shooting violence kept and carefully parodied. Although Wheatley hasn't yet achieved great financial success, he is an engaging filmmaker. He might have the opportunity to use his creative skills on Meg 2 with a budget at his disposal and gain some genuine recognition for his abilities.

Meg 2 will only have a small number of the original cast members back. Although Statham is back, practically all of the other major characters have been abandoned in the past. Together with Jonas Taylor of Statham, James "Mac" Mackreides of Cliff Curtis is back. The majority of the characters will change, but little is known about the plot. With regard to the book, it follows paleobiologist Jonas Taylor as he carries out investigations into the named megalodon shark. He comes across the Kronosaurus, a second terrifying prehistoric animal, along the route. Fans of the first movie can anticipate the big shark and a reptile that resembles a crocodile joining the adventure. For his part, Alten has praised the sequel's more darker atmosphere and even raised the prospect of a strict R-rating. Despite the fact that the previous movie wasn't technically a comedy, the idea of putting a gloomy twist on a lighthearted creature flick would be a significant departure.

The Meg starring Jason Statham
Fans of The Meg may find themselves having a very different experience with the sequel thanks to an intriguing new director and a startling shift in tone. Yet they'll probably still be eager to dive in given that Jason Statham is playing the lead and the titular super-shark is still in charge of the ocean. There might be a new Meg movie released every few years for the next many decades if The Trench is as popular as its predecessor. On August 4th, 2023, The Trench will surface and widen.
