The Data East Collection features the most titles out of the three 16-bit carts. Kinda. Ok, here's what I mean by that. There are three differnet families of games here, Fighter's Histroy 1 & 2, Magical Drop 1 & 2 and Side Pocket. Fighter's History is in the vein of Super Street Fighter 2 with one-on-one fisticuff action. Magical Drop is similar to Columns, Yoshi's Cookie and Puyo Puyo and Side Pocket is, well, a billiards game.
Fighter's History provides the opportunity to fight as a number of different combatants, each with their own skill sets. Graphically it looks to be a step behind what Capcom produced during this era but it's still a heck of a lot of fun. The AI seems smart, really smart and doesn't typically fall for the same repeated attacks without developing a method of defense or counter-attack. The Special attacks are really awesome, including some killer animations for reversals and counters. It's also hard as nails from the first match; there's no ramping up on this one and if you're not ready you're going to die. Often.
Fighter's History 2 is more of the same, however it has it's own battle to the top with the Mizagouchi mode. I don't know why they picked this character to have his own fight but he's a bad ass, reminding me of Chong Li from Bloodsport but more the hero than villain. Ryoko is a great opponent and repeatedly countered, flipped and reversed my attacks.
Magical Drop 1 & 2 are super fun and addictive matching games. The characters are cute and I'd actually love to see a version of these come out for Smartphones and Tablets, it would be a great portable experience for me. The multiple play modes each offer their own unique play mechanics and keep the challenge fresh.
Side pocket is, well it's billiards. Video. Billiards. It's easily the weakest title out of all three 16-bit cartridges however even this has its appeal. I've struggled to get past the second level but it still is fun. The music is mid-90's cheesy synth but it feels right at home. You dont' expect to step into a sleezy bar and hear classical music and Side Pocket maintains that mystique.
Why it RoX!
- 5 games on one cartridge
- Gives players a chance to play games they may never have had a chance to before
- Fighter's History is a great entry into the genre
- Amazing specials and counter attacks in Fighter's History
- Magical Drop is an addictive and fun puzzler
- Cool combos to remove multiple gems at a time in Magical Drop
What could be improved?
- 5 games but 2 sequels means a bit of repetition here
- Fighter's History 2 Mizagouchi Mode is hard as nails
- Side pocket is the weakest title out of all the Retro-bit multi-carts
Should You Buy One?
If you're a fan of 2D fighters and puzzlers/matching games definitely give this a look. I had never played Fighter's History or Magical Drop and had a great time every time I fired it up. I even dug spending time with Side Pocket. At $34.99 it's a decent investment, but I wouldn't quite call it a must-have.
