In this video we take you through the first few levels of one of the most anticipated retro video game releases in sometime, Sonic Mania.

If you flashback to the late 1980s or early 1990s there was a blue streak that was giving a certain fat little Italian plumber all he could handle. I’m of course talking about Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis. The first three games are renowned as some of the best platforming videogames ever made for any platform. They were blistering fast thanks to Sega’s Blast Processing, the music was amazing and it was simply a lot of fun. It seemed like everything was going great for Sonic and Sega, but then the dark times came.

Once Sega got out of the hardware business and simply became a software developer it was like the team behind Sonic didn’t know how to make good games anymore. Was Sonic dating humans? A werehog? A sword-wielding knight who didn’t say “Ni”? No one knows but one thing for sure, Sonic has not aged well. Sonic Mania aims to change this.

Sonic Mania is actually not made by Sega at all, instead they handed off development to Christian Whitehead , the same developer who helped bring Sonic the Hedgehog and other classic Sega IPs to mobile platform. In a sign of great faith Sega handed Whitehead the keys to the castle in an effort to recapture what made people fall in love with Sonic so much initially. As a Nintendo fanboy I will say that the love for the characters and what they mean were handled with the most care possible and this is an amazing game, not just as a Sonic title but as its own standalone title.

In this video we’re going to take you through the first few levels of Sonic Mania as played on the Nintendo Switch. The video captured was done from the Switch docked and run through our capture card.

Why Sonic Mania RoX!
They nailed what a platforming Sonic game needs to be
Amazing sound and visuals
Good challenge, it’s not just a rehash of old levels
Available for PS4, Xbox One, Switch and Steam
Optional Collector’s Edition for those who are super fans

What could be improved?
I am so not a fan of digial-only games, especially on the Switch with limited storage space
I miss some of the old music, like when you have invincibility. That was an iconic theme.
Some of the levels move so fast it’s hard to keep up with your eyes
No release on the Nintendo 3DS seems like a miss
There’s something just.. dirty… about playing a 16-bit Sonic game on Nintendo Hardware but I think I like it
